Reflections on the Vancouver launch
From the moment we stepped inside Princeps Hall, St. George’s School seemed to rise to meet us—the soaring timber ceiling, warm acoustics, a sense of history imbued in the rich wood beams. Our host elevated this first impression even further.
One of the things that made the night special for me was having the team from Page Two Books in attendance. After such a long road together; early drafts, edits, rewrites, design, layout, the whole dance—it meant a lot to raise a glass with the people who helped bring Quiet Champions into the world. It felt like a milestone we all earned.
We also welcomed the Beedie Luminaries mentors. These folks are walking the true path of mentorship alongside students at B.C. universities who otherwise would not be able to invest in a university education. We are so proud to be a part of the Beedie Luminaries movement, and the presence of these volunteers brought a quiet gravity into the room.
A highlight of the evening was something we’ve been keeping close to our chests for months:
Roy Group awarded The MacGregor Cup to Chief K’odi Nelson.
Pulling off that surprise required some engineering; emails, logistics, gentle nudges to make sure K’odi would actually be in the room on his way home from Toronto. When the moment arrived, and we finally got to put that Cup in his hands, the whole event lifted. His leadership is an example to us all, and we’ll share the full announcement very soon.
And then there was Nicola Wealth. Their support as our event sponsor in Victoria and Vancouver has meant the world to us. They were there at the very beginning when this whole plan was just taking shape, and they stayed for a ceremonial pint in the pub after the event was packed up. Their commitment to values-based leadership—and to genuine friendship—runs deep.
We captured the night on video, and I’m excited to see how that magic translates into something we can share more broadly. Some moments deserve to be held, not just remembered.
Finally, I want to shine a light on the Roy Group team. These launch events were something totally new for us. They asked a lot. And our crew stepped up with creativity, grit, and an unmistakable spirit of service. None of this happens without them.
Thank you, Vancouver.
